Helen
*** This bird is currently on our Waitlist and is with their current owner. It may be possible to visit and adopt this bird prior to it being moved to a foster home. Owner Said: Helen is a blind rainbow lorikeet. She used to live an a lorikeet flock in an aviary at a zoo. She had a mate named Hamlet who would feed her and defend her from the tricksters in the group. After he suddenly passed, Helen was having a hard time with getting bullied. It was at that point that I decided to bring her home to live out the rest of her golden years. She was around 15 years old at the time and with the big changes of losing her mate, her flock, and starting to live in a smaller cage, I expected she would not give me long with her. That was 5 years ago! Helen is doing incredibly well for a roughly 20 year old lorikeet, her feather condition may be a little rough but she is as spunky as ever. Helen can see light and dark and probably shadows, but not shapes. She doesn't like coming out of her cage because it is her safe space where she knows where everything is. We attempted to train her to step up but she was not a fan. She isn't the biggest fan of people, because she doesn't know what we are, but she does love to "babble" back when you talk to her! She has also learned to mimic her cat siblings meows, sometimes she vocalizes more often in meows than lorikeet sounds! As long as any other pets leave her alone, she is fine living with anyone. She can't see anything scary! Her favorite enrichment is paper and cardboard to shred. She also loves giving her rope swing a beating. She does have a birdie cave that she loves, I understand another caretaker may not want her to keep it but as she was not interacting with us much anyway, we did allow her to keep it. She has not laid any eggs in my care. Her favorite music is EDM and her favorite sounds are gunfire and explosions. She loves action movies, and The Dark Knight is her favorite to listen to! She will dance around, tweet and flap her wings to cheer on her man, Batman. Helen is looking for an understanding home to live out the rest of her golden years. She prefers hanging out by herself and is used to a low activity home. She may not be very social, but she is a joy to have around. She doesn't have the same complicated social requirements of a larger, younger or sighted bird. She just needs someone to talk to, to enrich her, and give her her favorite fruits. We may not know how much longer this old lady has left, but she's enjoying every single day.
About
Helen
Blind
Age or hatch date:
20 Years
Gender:
Female
Best qualities:
Helen is a low maintenance bird. She is mostly blind and has been her whole life. She is not very social and prefers to be alone. She isn't afraid of anything new or scary outside of her cage because she can't see it! She doesn't mind other pets as long as they leave her alone. She currently lives with cats that she screamed once at (supervised, she was inside her cage and the cats were curious what it was) and they never bothered her again. She has also lived with a dog. She loves to shred toys and dance to the sounds of action movies. Gunfire and explosions are her favorite sounds. Her favorite movie is The Dark Knight. She babbles back when you speak to her and has learned to mimic 4 different cat's meows. You will think you have a cat around more often than a bird! She prefers to have her own space, on a day that all you can muster is cleaning, feeding, and a few kind words, she doesn't need anything more than that.
Favorite food:
Papaya
Favorite toys:
round rope swing, bird hammock cave
Dowel or step-up trained:
Unknown
Challenges:
Owner Said: Her blindness is also her biggest challenge. She can see light/dark and probably shadows but not shapes. She doesn't know what we are and she is not interested in finding out. When I first brought her home, I attempted to train her to step up with hopes of giving her time on a playstand. She immediately got sexually aggressive with my hand and also threw herself off the perch I used to try and step her up on. She is not going to be a bird that hangs out with people or even come out of her cage much if at all.
Vocabulary:
Will "babble" back when you talk to her, like most parrots she loves baby voice. She mimics cat "meows" but not on cue. Many of her vocals are now meowing.
