Jazz

Umbrella Cockatoo

Meet

Jazz

Jazz is a big boy with a huge personality. He always excited to meet new people and will try to start a cockatoo conversation with whomever he meets. He is adventurous and loves to explore his surroundings. His mischievous nature is tempered by his understanding of his human’s vocal tone – he fully understands when he is being naughty. He is a very sweet bird in the way that only cockatoos can be. Jazz is in his happy place when he is sharing the couch with his human. He particularly loves to vocalize, enjoys music videos, and is as cuddly as cockatoos come. He loves shower time too – though it takes him a couple of minutes to really get going in the shower. Jazz’s turn-offs include new strange (to him) noises. He absolutely hates the vacuum and is very suspicious of the garbage man. Jazz seems fine with both men and women. He hasn’t been around children that we know of. Jazz would make an amazing companion for an experienced bird owner.

Age or hatch date:

41 yrs

Gender:

Male

Best qualities:

Funny and sweet

Favorite food:

Jazz really likes almonds in the shell. He isn’t too interested in people food with a couple of notable exceptions – he loves Cream of Wheat and Honey Nut Cheerios. He will happily eat apple and banana – but these must be hand fed to him.

Favorite toys:

In his cage – he enjoys playing with a toy that includes a roll of adding machine paper. He gets creative with the paper. He also likes food puzzles. Out of his cage – he enjoys hanging out in a paper grocery store bag with some wooden blocks thrown inside a small cardboard box. He really shreds!

Dowel or step-up trained:

Steps up to hand

Challenges:

Jazz comes from an environment where he wasn’t confined to a cage or a perch. So he wanders. He is really just following foster dad around, but he loves to open cabinets and go exploring, so you’ve got to keep your eye on him. He will hide under anything handy when he sees that you want to pick him up – but he has never been aggressive when getting scooped up. NOTE: He is happy to stay put when he is sharing the couch with his human. He can also be a bit hormonal but that has been relatively easily manageable with proper handling and distraction. When Jazz first came to his current foster, he was very freaked out and fairly aggressive. It took him about 6 weeks to relax and now he is very well behaved. Easy to handle, but still a big cockatoo with plenty of potential for chaos!

Vocabulary:

Jazz is very vocal and makes some crazy sounds. He “coughs” to get attention, occasionally breaks out in a wild laugh, wolf whistles, says Hi! to new people, and makes a lot of unknown/cockatoo sounds. I don’t think I have heard all of his vocalizations yet. If he is busy shredding, occasionally he’ll look at foster dad and “huff”. Then wait. Once foster dad “huffs” back, he’ll return to his business. It's his way of checking in.
